FASHION WEEK TRENDS: COLOUR

It was obvious early on that certain colour trends were emerging this season. Thankfully one of my favorites reigned supreme for fall/winter. Green! Wether it's sea green, olive, emerald or moss it's up to you. The army green, if not militarian trend was strong this year and extended to coats, knits, hats, shoes and scarves.

Second to green this season you could barely go a show without seeing burgundy or red, specifically the former. Givenchy chose red as a theme alongside stars and stripes but other designers chose it to make more of a statement. Or in the case of Mugler, burgundy made up entire looks in different shades.

Last up is blue. Diesel Black Gold released their look in a powdery tone but the closer we got to Paris the blue became more electric. Again with blue we see this used more as a statement piece so you can take pointers from these looks on how to execute it into your own style.

THE J&B MET 2012 'MADE DIFFERENT'

On the 28th of January the J&B Met will take place and for the first time ever I will be attending. Like, ever-ever. Of course in lieu of fancy masks you can barely see out of I am just going to wear some fancy sunglasses instead. Sunglass Hut is hosting the Inner Circle marquee at the Met, which is precisely where I will be. The theme is 'Made Different' and encourages you to wear something you wouldn't ordinarily wear. Yeh, I'm just going to wear what I want.

THOM BROWNE 2012 PARIS FASHION WEEK

You know when you watch a movie and it appears somehow in your dreams? Well it was like Thom Browne watched American Horror Story and the Rocky Horror Picture Show and this collection came of it the following day. Each look suggests a simpler look underneath and features staples like great shoes, scarves, knit hats and nautical trousers. Add to that, heavily exaggerated shoulders that ran through the collection, models ready for some warped fashion-cum-football event. I don't know... there are few collections that actually leave me speechless. Oh look an anchor!

AGNES B 2012 PARIS FASHION WEEK

Playing with gender-bending elements, Agnès B for Fall 2012 introduces mens tights, or mights/meggings I imagine someone, somewhere will pen them. But in addition to this, ballet pumps, denim skirts and cropped capes. If androgyny can work on women I don't see why men can't do it too. Also featured were some nicely cut burgundy suits with a double-breasted check, or red if you're up to playing a ring-leader.

PAUL SMITH 2012 PARIS FASHION WEEK

Old Smithy takes us out to see this season, but mostly in the literal translation with jellyfish printed mainline trousers and nautical knits. He tries to simulate the movement of moody water by layering neons under dark knits but takes the accent of neon to the edges of other garments too. We also see the return of old favorites like two-toned trousers, chunky knits and Peter Pan collars. All aboard now.

ANN DEMEULEMEESTER 2012 PARIS FASHION WEEK

Featuring a line-up of goth-like looks that suggest a change in colour preference, Ann Demeulemeester's collection offers long tunics, elongated silhouettes and bursts of electric blue and reds to accent the white and black palette. The star of the show was no doubt the gradient suiting with matching zipper boots. Did you enjoy this collection?

LANVIN 2012 PARIS FASHION WEEK

Stepping out in their signature high-tops, Lanvin models were decked in a series of masterful jackets and suits. Noticeably, this included dropped shoulders or ballooned sleeves that were matched with super slim or flared trousers (that I think are fantastic). Their palette was moody but still colourful, playful even with prison stripes in navy and dark camel. Wonderful. I really am... Lanvin this collection.

LOUIS VUITTON 2012 PARIS FASHION WEEK

Marc Jacobs may be trying to keep the chill out but this collection is a breathe of fresh air. Keeping the vintage inspiration theme going for fashion week this season, Louis Vuitton reached back to the 70s and 80s. We see oversized scarves, parkas in bold prints and two-toned suits (yes- one thousand times yes) and a kimono-suit hybrid seen as is or under traditional pin-stripe suiting.

MAISON MARTIN MARGIELA 2012 PARIS FASHION WEEK

Maison Martin Margiela may be trying to tell us that fashion is disposable. At the rate we go through it I wouldn't be surprised. Still, the other themes running through his newest collection are pretty varied from one end to the other. Wether it's fur lined jackets you're after, motocross pants or more refined looks like that of his camel coats and beige suiting, the house of Margiela is catering for it all, no matter how bizarre.

DIOR HOMME 2012 PARIS FASHION WEEK

Many of this seasons designers focused on fit, but Kris Van Assche leaned the other way. Plenty of oversized looks here with military and sportswear influences. Suits were the focal point but now they are low slung and relaxed compared to former seasons. What do you think?

In one of my favorite collections at this seasons Paris fashion week, Hermès epitomizes the sort of clothing I hope to own when I grow up. Gorgeous well-tailored and understated pieces galore, this collection sees black and brown as the focal point with accents of white, burgundy and blue. Leather stole the show with shirts, jackets and even full suiting. Marvelous.

ISSEY MIYAKE 2012 PARIS FASHION WEEK

John Galliano may have been absent from this collection but Bill Gaytten made sure there was enough theatrics to make up for it. For his first fall collection (this is his second for J.G) Gaytten goes bold in outerwear: large trenches in sheen, fur jackets and enlarged check. It's like the 50s in the future, featuring all the gangsters and henchman you could expect. Would you join the gang?

If you go out to the woods today... you will likely see a whole lot of this. A strong series of plaids and flannel thrown in with braced trousers, boots and chunky turtlenecks. Not to discount some fantastic jackets and suiting, wether they're double-breasted or adorned with leather panels you're ready to brave the upcoming cold... or the big bad wolf.

KENZO 2012 PARIS FASHION WEEK

For their first collection for Kenzo, creative directors Carol Lim and Humberto Leon deliver a playful collection with colour blocking, bold prints and sportswear. A wise choice for a debut because while it's a fun collection the construction of the suits and jackets were done beautifully. A fully wearable range with some wonderful pieces.

KRIS VAN ASSCHE 2012 PARIS FASHION WEEK

This season geek takes a class in cool. With edgy punk influences Van Assche takes staples and mixes them up. Enlarged checks, double belting and soft, long knits tell us the Belgian will join in formalizing the working class but it will be on his terms.

A winter without long trousers? Such was the imagined winter of the Raf Simons man. Certainly more applicable to our weird climate here in Cape Town, or at least the men who refuse to wear closed shoes. I digress. Colour blocking with mostly neutral bottoms we see green suits, fluffy canary yellow sweaters and burgundy knit hats with beady eyes peaking out beneath. Left of centre? Stefano Pilati focused his latest offering around two elements, fit and leather. So wether you're into small splashes of it or head-to-toe, YSL has you covered, literally. He incorporates leather into the lapels and pockets, full leather shirts and even on a fur-lined vest. And he takes notes from Jay-Z with a palette of "all black everything" or at least mostly, there are those grey pieces. He accents them with metal braced loafers, presumably so you can step into the next phase of his futuristic vision for the man-about-town.

Usually with a seasonal print or show piece a designer is secure in knowing theirs will be unique. Such was not the case for Moschino who revealed a face-brick printed suit only days before Jean-Paul Gaultier did the same. Oh Donatella, who's been slipping you the Kool-Aid? For Fall/Winter 2012 we step all the way back to the 90s with cropped, hyper-fluorescent injections, studded denim and then follow it with sleek suits with glittery lapels. In prior seasons Dsquared2 took us camping, to fight-club, to festivals and now it seems the boys are concerned with our education and have diverted us back to school. Fall/Winter is all packed with wearable and certainly covetable fashion injected with the same aesthetic we have come to love about the twins. Perhaps their lack of over-the-top pieces are owed to a recession or closing in of the end of the world but, be it gym-wear, jeans and camel overcoats or sleek tuxedo's, Dean and Dan Caten give you a season for the scholar just going about his day.

Diesel Black Gold brought us their very first Milan Fashion Week showing. Taking a crack at high-fashion the label delivered the kinds of looks you almost expect. They make thorough use of stripes, leather and velvet, thrown in with heavy knits, coloured suits and fashion pants worn by edgy models with tattoos. While their attempts were brave and executed for the most part I do have my reservations when it comes to fit. If it was their plan forgive me, but I think the suits could have been better tailored because it makes it a little sloppy. A blue suit with sleek long lapels? Awesome, but I'd have the pants taken in a little below the knee.

CANALI FALL/WINTER 2012 MILAN FASHION WEEK

The banker in me would love this collection of suits. From double-breasted in a triple-stripe to floral printed suits with a turn-up, Canali try to cover all bases. For the colder months the design house is aimed at keeping the palette fall toned but add to that a strong punch in detail.

GIORGIO ARMANI FALL/WINTER 2012 MILAN FASHION WEEK

Hammertime? That's was my first question with Giorgio Armani's newest offering. It was like a 90s American spent a summer in France. The trousers were baggy and the silhouettes for the most part were unshapely, even for a muscled model. A clear indication they ran the opposite way this season to some degree, opting for comfortable opulence. That said, I enjoyed the use of cobalt blue in the coats, the sharp, short shaped collar on his shirts and the construction of his waistcoats. Are we heading back to the 90s in terms of trouser fit? Not sure I'm fully on-board yet.

Z ZEGNA FALL/WINTER 2012 MILAN FASHION WEEK

Z Zegna decided prints could sit this one out. At least for the most part. The monochromatic collection presented us with gorgeous green sheen suits in slim cuts with turn-ups, dirty mustard double-breasted suits with leather overcoats and burgundy sheen trousers I would actually wear. Local designers who favor sheen in their menswear collections should take note because this is how it's done.

A designer who can make a grown man look good in a fur coat gets a high-5 from me. John Richmond dropped a collection of specially designed jackets ranging from parkas to duffel coats with a seemingly tame bottom-half. In this way he allows items like red tartan and leather jackets,windowpane and skull-lined lapeled suits do all the talking. Would you wear pieces from his collection?

We have come to expect a good show from Gucci over the years so it was no surprise they gave us one this season too. Floral suits, super slim trousers, boots to the knee and fur coats, I mean, c'mon. Frieda Giannini delivers another opulent line-up in winter tones of emerald green, red and browns. Now if only they supplied this stock to our local Gucci; the collection has my name all over it.

Etro with the alleged influence of Pegasus delivered a season choc-full of old favorites like enlarged paisley prints and velvet but included new details like feathers. With the vivid palette explosion Etro's latest collection offers greens and pomegranate red. Then come puffer-jackets, overcoats, bright checks and the introduction of a poncho-like shawl with their native American/Mexican influence. A well-rounded collection from one of my personal favorites.

Iceberg delivered a well-rounded collection this season. Notice the relaxed fit of the trousers while still maintaing fitted jackets and coats. Royal blue jackets to layer, chunky knits, gorgeous deep green suiting? Amazing. So much to love about this collection on the basis of it being so wearable but with a slight punk/hipster influence. Nicely done, don't you agree?

CALVIN KLEIN FALL/WINTER AT 2012 MILAN FASHION WEEK

Calvin Klein may have stuck to a neutral palette this season but offers croc-skin contrast paneling, colour blocking and oversized, boxy cuts which have a distinctly 90s feel. MONCLER GAMMER BLEU AT MILAN FASHION WEEK 2012

Always the minimalist designer, Thom Browne delivered a collection inspired by race car driver Ayrton Senna. As you can see red, yellow and white served as the main ingredients this season but he added a few quirks into it. Firstly he redefined the puffer jacket by introducing padded/quilted scarves, jackets, pants and long coats. He opted for white gloves this season unlike many of his peers who chose leather. Shoulders were even extended and heavily padded on some but later came the checked pieces in more toned down grays and blue but not lacking in character. What are you thoughts on this collection?

Whoever can get William Dafoe to walk a runway deserves applause, but Muiccia Prada was doing quite alright on her own before the seven Hollwood top players arrived. This regal line-up may have adapted looks from the 1920s but Muiccia brought it into 2012. Her collection was modest but packed with power jackets and superior tailoring in plum, burgundy and grays and dotted with the right amount of eccentricity. Fantastic. What did you think of the show?

TRUSSARDI 1911 FALL/WINTER 2012 AT MILAN FASHION WEEK

Trussardi got their models to strut all the way back to the 1970s. While the theme was obvious it was the detailing and styling of the collection that seemed to do the era justice. Leather waistcoats, slight flair suiting with large lapels and plenty of turtlenecks. Even the palette was on-point with a rusty auburn and mustard with materials that look a little itchy. I can start to see that soon we will gravitate back to a wider legged suit and trouser, how do you feel about that?

While many of her peers were aiming focus on coats and suiting for Fall/Winter Angela Missoni made it all about knitwear. Long, patterned, layered or striped her collection encompassed for me the relaxed mind-set of a Winter man; warm and comfortable while looking on-trend. The tones were earthy and the looks bohemian but there is no doubting this collection is wearable even for a city man.

SALVATORE FERRAGAMO MILAN FASHION WEEK 2012

This is my kind of Winter attire. Gorgeous royal blue or plum coloured suits and coats with the right colour dash of purple or rich browns in shoes or gloves. Excellent tailoring through-out, classic office-wear most certainly suitable for any modern version of Mad Men.

VIVIENNE WESTWOOD FALL/WINTER 2012 MILAN FASHION WEEK

I was waiting for a coffee order this morning when a show came on FTV. Men with icicles hanging from their beards or wearing a three piece suit with opposing tartan prints from one leg to the other. It had to be Vivienne Westwood and I was right. I am thoroughly enjoying the jackets this season, especially the green tartan check (top left) but on its immediate right a more 70s cut beauty worn with mustard yellow shoes. Fantastic. Sometimes the off-centre designer can go overboard but I loved many of these pieces (more so individually). If the world really is going to end Aunty Viv' is just making sure we go down looking good.

FRANKIE MORELLO FALL/WINTER 2012 MILAN FASHION WEEK

I get the distinct feeling the Frankie Morello man is on a pilgrimage to Tibet and once there, turns into Adam Lambert. This was my feeling while watching his Fall/Winter show for 2012. I didn't feel like they made any sense in the same show, but separately, if anything, they were interesting. Bead work, bright colour blocking and bindi's show the obvious eastern influence but where in the world does sewn on buttons and spikes come into that?
Update: A commenter pointed out that the collection moves quite cohesively from the harsh black embellished look to a more natural Eastern style, that I could have offered a more fair review and he's quite right. In fact if you look at the collection carefully it is almost as if Maurizio Modica and Pierfrancesco Gigliotti were taking this rocker styled man and stripping him down to his most humble and presumably spiritual self, after shedding the materialistic influence of a western man.

ERMENEGILDO ZEGNA MILAN FASHION WEEK HIGHLIGHTS 2012

Ermenegildo Zegna has Winter covered.Literally, from checks to houndstooth, boots to leather gloves he is leaving no room for a chill. But cool, you'll look. The entire line is super versatile to carry you from city to the weekend and just look at that fantastic sherling coat! He certainly went all out with the theme with all these Nordic looking models. Re-inventing an all-black look for runway is a bit of a task so I forgive Ennio Capasa on those, but these gorgeous looks below spoke to me. GQ deems these 'jewel-toned' but the colours remind me more of mediterranean water and I could certainly dive into any of these two looks.

It was all sleepwear for Dolce and Gabbana this season but I'm afraid by that I'm only implying it was a bit of a snooze fest. We already are familiar with their sleek suits but the paper boy theme is running a little thin for yet another season. Sure it has the updated embroidered detail from the Victorian era but it's a little too same-same for my liking. Also, no David Gandy? C'mon.

BURBERRY MILAN FASHION WEEK 2012

We are beginning to see signs of Christopher Bailey at his cheekiest. Now after years at the head of Britain's most successful and beloved brands we get to see him have fun. This season there is no shortage of gorgeously tailored suiting or trenches but now he splashed it with colour and the right amount of eccentricity, and foxes! The collection, aptly named The Gentleman includes heritage cotton gabardine, worsted paper herringbone wool suits, scoop neck pullovers and the polka-dot to name only a few. There was so much to love about this collection I can't even begin to explain properly enough. Another hole-in-one for Bailey, for sure. What do you think?

JOHN VARVATOS FALL WINTER COLLECTION MILAN 2012

The Rockstar in the Varvatos man is not going anywhere this season. His look is more refined and certainly more chic for 2012. Here we see three-piece suits with a rocker edge, heavy knits and gorgeous window pane check. I particularly enjoyed his new take on the modern blazer with a slanted or elongated finish.Some of his looks were bathed in cement grey tones with plenty of layering. I don't know about you but I like this grown up Rocker. Thoughts?

NEIL BARRETT MILAN FASHION WEEK 2012

I was pleased with Neil Barretts simple and classic collection this season. Not only are the colours neutral but they are all wearable. This collection makes it all about the outerwear with strong emphasis on coats. But it features a variety of reinvented or tweaked looks like camel coats, mustard hoodies in shelling fabrics and slim trousers with bulky soled shoes.

JIL SANDER HIGHLIGHTS MILAN FASHION WEEK 2012

A praised collection from Jil Sander delivers us a re-imagining of American Psycho meets Wallstreet. This time Patrick Batemen updates his Valentino suits for a slick collection of fitted leather-wear. Not entirely the most practical of fabric choices for a suit but aesthetically the media ate this show up. Belted trenches, crisp white shirts and my favorite, gorgeous double breasted black suits with gloves. Great show, I'm only a little concerned what Raf Simons might have put in those lunch bags.

ROBERTO CAVALLI HIGHLIGHTS MFW 2012

Roberto Cavalli finished off day one of Milan Fashion Week yesterday but he is first up on our highlights. Cavalli prepares us for a cold winter season in a collection of moody blues but adds all the right elements in his detailing. Tuxedo lapels with leather pieces, acid yellows, purple and even salmon coloured leather were included. If anything this varied collection of looks shows us the many possible men who wear them, be it sophisticated man-about-town or dare I say it, hipster rocker. Nicely done.

LIL WAYNE: TRUKFIT T-SHIRT DESIGNER

Taking notes from other Hip Hop artists/entrepreneurs, Lil Wayne has now started up his own fashion label. While he won't be showing in Milan this weekend the rapper will start us off with a range of t-shirts under the brand Trukfit which he presented on Thursday.

Pajama swag they're calling it because 'everybody's into suits right now" says Marisa Flores, Wayne's stylist, that it's all about being comfortable. Perhaps we don't share the same relaxed sentiments of rolling out of bed and chucking on a good tee. The event had models painted silver and dressed in cargo shorts and socks pulled up and saw the likes of Russell Simmons showing up for support.

Trukfit is an acronym for “The Reason You Kill For It". Thoughts?

People associate Steve Jobs with Apple so it makes sense that when you think of GQ you come to think of Dylan Jones, too. The editor for GQ's British magazine was just announced as Chair of the Fashion 2012 Menswear committee by the British Fashion Council (BFC).

First order of business according to the BFC will be form a committee of various influencial figures within the mens fashion industry to plan a host of events for 2012. They aim to celebrate and showcase British menswear on all levels, including emerging talent, but also to formalise the working party and advisory committee in delivering their ambitious plans and surpass current growth and support within Men's Day at Fashion Week.

Dylan will be co- hosting an event in Paris, during Men’s Fashion Week, on Sunday 22nd January to announce the first of many exciting new plans for British menswear in London during 2012. He will host the event alongside Chairman of the BFC, Harold Tillman CBE.

DIESEL BLACK GOLD HEADS TO MILAN FOR 2012

Come January 17 Diesel Black Gold will be unveiling their latest collection. Only this time they will be showing in Milan and not alongside their womenswear in New York. Diesel Chief Renzo Rosso told WWD that he had a serious plan and that "The choice of showing in Milan also further defines the separation between the men's and women's division, the latter of which will continue to show in New York. Milan is the city of excellence in terms of business for men's wear, and we are now being recognised as a real, distinctive brand."

It is also reported that Diesel Black Gold will be releasing their first boutique store in New York in February with more stores set to open globally in the near future. What do you think of this jeans wear brand branching off into high-fashion, would you buy into it?

I always love a good Dsquared campaign and this one is no different. Saturation, lots of colour and of course a very, very subtle hint of sex. For SS12 the kids have gone out to the festivals and by the looks of it they may even be the band along with Natasha Poly as a groupie. I love it all but nerd glasses, in 2012? I have my doubts. Accompanying Poly for this campaign is Dmitriy Tanner, Matt Woodhouse, Ton Heukels and Paolo Anchis.

Celebrities really do like to branch out so it is not much of a surprise that Blair Underwood (Dirty, Sexy, Money and New Adventures of Old Christine) has decided to do the same. Thankfully it wasn't another fragrance venture because I think we have enough right now.

Underwood has partnered with K&G to release a range of mens suiting called the BU collection (hmmm). They promise a premier line of tailored suits inspired by the actor. Which I imagine means he didn't have a lot of influence in the designing of the garments, but who knows. He decided to join K&G for this venture to offer men good quality suiting at an affordable price point so can you really blame the guy?

It is a relief to get outside and break free from the confines of formal shoes. Let me tell you, I am almost always wearing a a brogue or boot of some kind. When I finally go casual I relish in it. Recently I popped into Mr. Price in Sea Point. I approached the mens shoe section and discovered a wall of colorful espadrilles.

I haven't purchased anything in Mr. Price for maybe four years so I was very happy to discover they have made the change in direction that the industry is headed for. They are not 100% there yet (in menswear at least) but it is a start.

I have also never owed a pair of espadrilles in my life and I promise you it was like meeting a long lost sibling. I have blogged about espadrilles before but only from a visual standpoint. Also there was nothing available locally, until now. There are many different colours to choose from and they are pretty damn comfortable. I wore them solidly for 5 days and then bought a different colour just so I had an excuse to keep wearing espadrilles. And for R89? Pffff. Time to go outside and have some fun, boys. Hey, how do you rate me as a foot model? Good, right?

I popped into Sunglass Hut last week while they unpacked their new stock and I was a little surprised when I saw these new Rayban Wayfarers. Although I doubt their objective was to make the frames look wing-like in any way it reminded me of dragon fly wings. This new special series is meant to give you a three dimensional pair of shades. They look like they could be quite loud, but in fact don't look out of place at all, in fact they look rather cool.

Party Season is here and if I didn't know it, my string of post-party headaches would be a dead give-away. First up was the follow up to last years very successful Puma social club that was held in different locations locally. This year the party was hosted at Quay 4 at the V&A Waterfront. If they could pin down as many people every weekend I would be there all the time. There was a fantastic vibe, even if it took 30 mins to order a drink. Holiday Murray and Jack Parow were among the selected entertainers, the former of which I had never heard of before but thoroughly enjoyed.

The usual suspects were present, Puma's photo booth, foosball and ping-pong tables and a generous supply of Cape Town's young and beer-happy cool crowd. Can't wait for next year. Special thanks go out to Bianca and the Splash PR team for a fantastic night out.

WEEKEND OFFENDER OPENS IN SOHO

Weekend offender opened up their flagship store in Soho this Wednesday and we were there. While the event was a little crowded and clumsy the overall vibe was a good one. Instead of champagne and canapés guests were treated to a table of ribs and beer to give it more of a street vibe. Add to that the rotation of rap stylings from three different artists.

Attendees were offered a 50% discount on all merchandise on the night and even a short, back and sides from their grooming station. Good fun and a good success. Special thanks to Amy Brown and Daniel Champion for images and for attending.

The grapevine has been churning out a new rumor of another great designer joining the massive success of an H&M collaboration. With Versace currently supplying the brand in 300 stores with exotic, flashy and affordable versions of their label it is already on peoples minds about who will be next.

It is starting with a whisper but before long Tom Ford may be the center of a frenzy should he join Hennes & Mauritz AB with a collaboration. The former Gucci creative director is a leader in luxury menswear. So while he would probably do fine without it, those fans who would not be able to afford suiting in one of his few stores, now could, should he decided to join in. H&M's creative adviser Margareta van den Bosch told Business Week that Ford was "a very interesting name" and would certainly not be a bad choice.

If Ford decided to go ahead with this proposed rumor he would be the 8th designer since Lagerfeld in 2004. So what would the 50 year old bring to the table? Certainly a good fitting suit and white shirt combo, but what about his leisure wear? What would you like from a Tom Ford for H&M collaboration? No word from Ford's representatives yet.

Some people are wallet people. Others are card-holder types, or money-clippers but there are still many man who still carry a wallet. I have a trusty plain brown leather that I rotate with a blue suede wallet I got from The Summit. But once, as a gift, I was given one of these paper wallets. I love this. Often you see great editorials in woman's fashion magazines that are simple but romantic or reminiscent of an era but not always for men. Editorials like this one remind me why I used to have the James Dean hair cut and how awesome this style of dress is. For issue #24 of VMAN Simon Nessman stars with the help of Eniko Mihalik, Jakob Wiechmann, Justin Bravo, Matthew Terry, Matthew Coatsworth and Nicolas Ripolis. WHAT IS MOVEMBER AND WHY SHOULD I JOIN IN?

The mustache is a very unappreciated thing, as most of you joining in will find out. I'm a pretty confident guy so it was a surprise to me when my mustache made me a little shy at first and people started to look at me funny. But why? It's super manly, plus my Pops had one for many years in the 80's, although come to think of it he did own an awful lot of sweater vests, so that might not be the best example to go on.

I shaved the beard off in Knysna on the 1st of November but since I didn't really see people until I returned home to Cape Town the following day, it was a small shocker that people started giving me the second-take. Like, a lot.

So why on earth do we grow mustaches in November and call in Movember? Support! It's no different to wearing a red or pink ribbon, it's just on your face instead. We grow mustaches to support prostate and testicular Cancer initiatives. There was a moment in traffic one morning when a guy on a scooter grinned at me because we both have mustaches. A nod to camaraderie no doubt.

The rules state that you must shave cleanly on the 1st of the month and grow your mo' from scratch. But because some men won't do it, companies have come up with a good way to ~~bribe them~~ get them involved. Give-aways! Even as I typed this post I got a knock on my door from el Jimador who gave me a nice bottle of tequila. Yes, of course I had a shot immediately. I have the flu but I'm not dead. El Jimador will be at various hot spots in South Africa giving away a whole bunch of prizes so keep your mustache twirled and ready.

A week to do nothing but read (In Cold Blood by Truman Capote), watch TV (Ultimate Survivor) and catch up with friends. It really does feel like time stops when I drive in to town. Of course, as luck would have it the minute I returned to Cape Town I got the man flu. Go figure.

POSITIVE HEROES 2011 IN CAPE TOWN

If you didn't attend the Positive Heroes charity event last night then this is what you missed: Lot's of people. Lot's and lot's of people, some in the most fascinating outfits. And what a great energy for a great cause. Last year I attended their second year for the organizations annual charity fashion event. Now with their third year they moved the shindig to the Civic Center where they featured a list of designers who each showed four looks. I was pleased to see that the majority of designers were menswear. I took a lot more photographs but just included a few of the crowd favorites for the post. I was impressed with a couple of the designers but there was a shocker or two, I promise you. Still, it was all in the name of charity and a fun night out.

After the fashion show Ariella Kuper, who is an auctioneer (fun fact, I used to work in art auctioneering many years ago) helped raise money for the organization with the help of one of a kind garments provided by the designers themselves. Even Levi's chipped in to offer a gift card to the highest bidder of a particular item. Well executed and greatly organized! R80 000 was earned! That is phenomenal.

Mario Testino has been photographing for Burberry Prorsum campaigns for some time now so it was a surprise when I stumbled on an editorial for Japanese Uomo that was photographed by Yoshihito Sasaguchi in a variety of big labels. Tisk risk. As was the case for True Love quite recently when they featured a rather familiar spread shot from Vogue. Are we out of idea's or just not brainstorming hard enough?

The fact that I receive a flood of hits any time I mention James Franco makes the following cover no surprise. Man of the Decade? That's quite a statement, but okay then. He has had a rather successful run lately. The cover was shot by Inez can Lamsweerde and Vinhoodh Matadin for the Decade issue which collaborated with, among others, Karl Lagerfeld and Terry Richardson as they look at 150 years of men's style.

POSITIVE HEROES 2011

Positive Heroes returns this year with a fashion event that hopes to speak out against the stigma of HIV. We went last year and it was a great success. Now, on November 3rd you can get all dressed up and attend the event held at the Cape Town Civic Centre.

Tickets to attend cost R200, the proceeds of which will be used for core organisational funding and various Positive Heroes initiatives. The fashion show will be divided into two halves, daywear and eveningwear, with a short auction of incredible fashion prizes, facilitated by Auction Alliance’s Ariella Kuper (who is fantastic), following each section.

In addition to this Springleap.com and The Cape Town Fashion Council (CTFC) have launched a unique design competition entitled ‘Inspire Courage’. The competition invited creatives to produce a design that encapsulated the courage needed to overcome stigma and embodies the Positive Heroes concept of ‘ordinary people living extraordinary lives’.

Voting is taking place in the week of the 24th October. The winning designer will receive a prize of R10 000 and two runner-up prizes of R2 000 will be awarded. The design will be featured on volunteer T-shirts at the Positive Heroes fashion show as well as on printed A0 canvases available for auction on the night. Post-event, winning designs can be purchased on the Springleap.com website with proceeds going to the Positive Heroes initiatives.
